HomeLand RoverRange Rover Sport Supercharged / SVR2021Land RoverSelect a year202220212020201920182017Highs Big V-8 power, muscular styling, impressive off-road capability plus on-road speed..Lows Adding features costs a pretty penny, infotainment system is slow, third row is for little ones For luxury-SUV buyers who want a big wallop of performance with their prestige, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and SVR models The 2021 Range Rover Sport Supercharged and SVR models are for a different breed of luxury SUV buyer—one who's looking for something with attitude and a thumping V-8 engine. The mill under the hood of these beasts is supercharged and churns out a healthy 518-hp in its standard guise and a meaty 575-hp in all-out tune for the SVR. High-performance SUVs aren't a new concept; Land Rover has plenty of competition from the likes of BMW, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. But what makes the Range Rover Sport Supercharged special is how easily it can transition from back-road pounder to off-road superstar. It's got a softer side as well both the Sport Supercharged and SVR offer luxuriously-outfitted cabins with lots of room for the family. Of course, all this goodness comes at a stiff price—one that reaches quickly into the six-figure range. What's New for 2021?A new range-topping SVR Carbon Edition model joins the lineup for 2021. It doesn't offer any additional performance upgrades but instead focuses on a more sinister appearance thanks to exposed carbon fiber on the hood, front bumper, and grille. More carbon fiber trim can be found inside the Carbon Edition's cabin and under the hood; 22-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels are also and Which One to BuyThe extra horsepower that's offered on the top-of-the-line SVR trim is nice, but in our opinion it's not quite worth the extra expense. Go with the Dynamic trim and use that savings to add some cool options—or save it for your fuel bill. There's still a lot to love with this "base" model, including 21-inch wheels, a power sunroof, a 13-speaker Meridian sound system, 16-way power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree exterior camera your perfect ride! We're partnering with Carvana because we want to make it easy for you to find the exact vehicle you're looking InventoryEngine, Transmission, and PerformanceThe supercharged V-8 engine under the hood is what separates Supercharged and SVR models from more run-of-the-mill Land Rover Range Rover Sports. Simply put It's a beast. Making 518 horsepower in "regular" Supercharged models and 575 in the tuned-up SVR trim, the supercharged V-8 that powers these models is smooth, guttural, and eye-wateringly quick. Paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, this setup readily and easily blasts past legal speed limits. True to its off-road heritage, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged features an all-wheel-drive system with six selectable drive modes. Auto mode will suffice most of the time, while Dynamic dials in sportier settings for the engine and transmission. If the mood strikes you to take this nearly $100,000 SUV off the beaten path, there are modes for snow, mud, sand, and rock crawling. The Sport Supercharged grips the road tightly when cornering. The steering in our test car was well weighted perhaps a little too heavy for soccer-drop-off duty, but perfect for back roads and accurate. The Sport's tall body leans perceptibly in tight corners and sweeping curves—as you might expect in a top-heavy SUV—but it never loses its composure. The Range Rover Sport Supercharged's maximum towing capacity is a stout 7716 Economy and Real-World MPGIt's difficult to enjoy the visceral pleasures of a supercharged V-8 without suffering at the pump, but the Sport Supercharged is about as efficient as rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GLE63, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and the BMW X5 M. The most efficient model is rated at 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. In our real-world highway fuel-economy testing, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged delivered just 18 mpg. Drivers who are more interested in the Range Rover Sport's cachet than in the Supercharged models' performance may be just as happy with the supercharged V-6 version reviewed separately. It boasts an EPA rating of 23 mpg highway, while the turbo-diesel model has a highway rating of 28 Comfort, and CargoThe Range Rover Sport Supercharged comes standard with sumptuous leather interior trimmings and can have 20-way adjustable, massaging front seats and four-zone automatic climate control. The Autobiography model we tested, with its top-of-the-line, super-luxe interior treatment, had attractive aluminum trim and plenty of baubles. However, it failed to feel significantly more expensive or comfortable than the interior of any other Land Rover we've driven. Driver and front passenger enjoy acres of space to spread out in the Range Rover Sport, and second-row passengers will be comfortable even if they have slightly less space than those in the second row of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. The optional third row should not be considered a realistic solution for families who frequently need to seat more than five. The Range Rover Sport Supercharged has less cargo space than many competitors, but it still offers enough storage for most every-day use. Cabin cubbies are ample, especially in the front row. In our testing, the Range Rover Sport held fewer carry-on suitcases than its key rivals, but the nine we fit behind the second row of seating our test vehicle was not equipped with the optional third row should be enough for most RoverInfotainment and ConnectivityThe Range Rover Sport Supercharged and the SVR both come standard with Land Rover's InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard. The dual-screen setup looks great, impresses with its crisp graphics, and comes standard with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The lower screen handles vehicle functions such as climate control and drive-mode settings, while the upper one provides access to music, navigation, and communication. As much as we like the way it looks, however, it proved problematic both from a stability and usability standpoint in our long-term Range Rover and Driver-Assistance FeaturesThe Range Rover Sport hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Sport Supercharged models do offer a useful array of driver-assistance technologies, but lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control are all optional. For drivers who prioritize those features, the cost is reasonable at least in comparison with the already hefty base price. Key safety features include Standard automated emergency braking Available lane-keeping assist Available adaptive cruise controlWarranty and Maintenance CoverageLand Rover's warranty coverage very closely matches that of the competition, but it's outdone in a few spots by the offerings from BMW, Jeep, and Volvo. We like Brutal performance, obnoxious noise, impressive handling, superbly comfortable. We don't like Brutal thirst, obnoxious amounts of carbon fibre. What happens when you add a conspicuous amount of exposed carbon fibre to the already-in-your-face belligerence of the unapologetically supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport SVR? Well, rather obviously, you get a very fast SUV, but also a deep moral conundrum... Do you mean you are struggling to balance the SVR’s superb performance and sound with its disastrous effects on the planet?Damien O'Carroll/StuffThe Range Rover Sport SVR crouches down mighty low on its air suspension in Track mode, and it certainly helps with the corners. Not so much here though. No, that’s not it at all. The Carbon Edition of the Sport SVR tears me in two very different idealogical directions at once because every time I hear the mighty supercharged V8 explode into life and roar like a disgruntled bear as it accelerates obscenely off the line, my bogan side giggles like an excited schoolboy. Every. Damn. Time. It is awesome. I love it. READ MORE * First drive review Jaguar XE Project 8 * Jaguar brings something Special to F-Pace SUV * Is this the most un-PC car on the planet? * Jaguar F-Type SVR goes over the top and then some But every time I look at it, my anti-establishment anarchist side just wants to set it alight and laugh at the owner’s anguish as his ridiculous display of over-compensation is reduced to a smouldering pile of aluminium, carbon fibre and unpaid parking O'Carroll/StuffThe Carbon Edition adds a flagrantly extravagant exposed carbon fibre bonnet. And that’s just the start. Basically, I love conspicuous displays of power, but despise conspicuous displays of wealth. It’s my curse. The Carbon Edition adds the optional carbon fibre exterior pack and exposed carbon fibre bonnet $19,650, carbon fibre interior trim, $2850, a carbon fibre engine cover $3850 and larger 22-inch gloss black alloy wheels $3200 to the Sport SVR, taking something that is already borderline offensive, but absolutely awesome a huge noisy V8 SUV that costs a vast sum of money and goes very fast and adds an extra layer of obnoxiousness in the form of a literal layer of glossy carbon fibre. All of this carbon fibre will set you back a healthy $20k over the standard Sport SVR – which is a relative bargain considering how much each pack is separately, but it still doesn't anything tangible, apart from letting everyone know you had a spare $20k to waste. Okay, and it is terrible for the planet too, but, man that V8 is something else... So it sounds good then?Damien O'Carroll/StuffThe mighty supercharged V8 also gets a fancy carbon fibre cover. It sounds superb. But then that mighty SVR V8 always has in everything Jaguar Land Rover choose to wedge it into. In the Range Rover Sport it isn’t quite as feral-sounding as it is in a Jaguar, but the belligerent bellow it emits under full-throttle is hair-raisingly primal, with that deep-down lizard part of your brain being triggered into a fight or flight response every time you hear it. Which is handy, because the Sport SVR will happily fight and fly. But there is another level to the noise, because if you decided to go full “my neighbours hate me” by slipping it into sport mode, it gets even more aggressive, with a barrage of bangs and pops on the overrun that borders on utterly unnecessary. It both is and most definitely isn’t utterly unnecessary, of course, which is the beauty of O'Carroll/StuffJust in case you thought the top of the bonnet looked like a sticker which it does, that’s real, unadorned carbon fibre. The mighty V8 also offers simply mind-melting performance, with the feral roar accompanying eye-widening acceleration that doesn’t ever seem to let up before your nerve does as it rockets from a standing start to 100kmh in seconds, and then well beyond. You do have to remain aware of its sheer heft heading into a corner, however, as the Sport SVR is still a very big, rather tall chap – even hunkered down almost alarmingly low on its air suspension. It handles impressively well for something so big, tall and heavy, but a slow-in, brutally aggressive-out approach is required. Luckily, the SVR also has spectacular brakes. So it sounds brilliant, goes like hell and actually handles relatively well. You do like it then?Damien O'Carroll/StuffThe Sport SVR is brutally fast and handles remarkably well for something roughly the size and shape of a block of flats too. Yeah, except that other part of me still wants to spraypaint “c..k, p..s, Partridge” along the side every time I catch a glimpse of the excessive carbon fibre. Which, as mentioned earlier, is literally everywhere, and is totally pointless. Now, it’s not carbon fibre in particular that I have a problem with, it’s what it represents here – this isn’t a hypercar that needs to save every ounce of weight in the pursuit of speed. There’s no extra performance and the weight savings are negligible on something this big anyway everything the carbon fibre replaces is either aluminium or plastic, so the sole purpose is to simply spend more money making something already quite obnoxious into something completely obnoxious. So you do hate it then?Damien O'Carroll/StuffIs there really such a thing as too much carbon fibre? The Carbon Edition answers that with a resounding yes’. No. Despite my eat-the-rich pointless posturing, I still love it, because everything about driving it is just so awesome. I can’t, however, see the point in buying it when the standard SVR is every bit as awesome, yet also cheaper and is not going to make you look like quite such a massive knob. Oh, then of course, there is the fact that the sheer conspicuous consumption of a supercharged V8 in a vehicle weighing more than two tonnes is offensive to anyone who breathes air. But that is a whole different idealogical struggle, and one that you really should be having if you are wealthy enough to waste an extra $20k for carbon fibre bits on your $200k-plus SUV...Damien O'Carroll/StuffThe Range Rover Sport SVR is obnoxious, outrageous and awesome. Any other cars I should consider? Despite the rapid rise of EVs, there is actually no shortage of brutally fast V8-powered large SUVs that cost more than $200k. There is, of course, the 460kW/750Nm BMW X5 M Competition and its silly coupe’ twin, the X6 M that lands here at $225,900 $231,900 for the X6 M, the 450kW/850Nm Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and its silly coupe’ twin as well that hits at $234,100 $240,200 for the silly coupe and the 441kW/800Nm Audi RS Q8 that costs $243,900, all of which are equally obnoxious, equally fast and sound equally fantastic. It just gets excitingly more expensive from there, with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Aston Martin DBX, Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga... the list goes on... Of course then there is the smaller Jaguar F-Pace SVR with a detuned 405kW/700Nm version of the supercharged V8 in the Rangie for $169,900, or you could buy the forthcoming Tesla Model X Plaid that is cheaper $209,990, much, much faster but has all the aural charm of a blender and, unfortunately, still looks like a Model X.

Coinciding with the unveiling of the 2021 Range Rover this week, Land Rover has also introduced an MY2021 update for its Range Rover Sport lineup. The updated includes a new range-topping SVR Carbon Edition. Only mild changes have been made to the exterior, with a new SV Premium Palette paint colour range being launched to boost potential exclusivity. Satin finishes and eight new colours are being introduced, including Tourmaline Brown, Amethyst Grey-Purple and Petrolix Blue. Inside, passengers are greeted with Land Rover’s latest Touch Pro Duo system with dual touch-screens as standard. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now included across the board, with 4G Wi-Fi connections for up to eight devices. The MY21 cabin also uses a filtration system, and passengers can hit the Purify’ button to remove fine dust and allergens from the cabin. Like the big daddy Range Rover in 2021 form, the Sport gets a range of new inline-six petrol and diesel engine options. Perhaps the biggest news is the turbo-diesel inline-six, replacing the TDV6 options. It is being presented in D250, D300, D350 form. All feature mild hybrid tech, with outputs spanning 183kW/600Nm, 221kW/650Nm, and 258kW/700Nm, respectively. The latter version replaces the outgoing TDV8. The P300 continues to open the petrol lineup, featuring a turbo four-cylinder that generates 221kW and 400Nm. Going for the P400e sees that engine paired with an electric motor plug-in hybrid system for a combined output of 297kW and 640Nm. And then at the top are the P525 and P575 V8 models. These feature a supercharged V8 that pumps out 386kW and 625Nm in the case of the regular P525. However, going for the flagship SVR variant, the outputs stretch to a whopping 423kW and 700Nm. The SVR offers a claimed 0-100km/h time of just seconds, while the top speed is 283km/h. It remains the fastest and most powerful Range Rover Sport ever. Speaking of the SVR, there’s a new Carbon Edition which pairs the already-handsome styling of the SUV with some attractive go-fast bits and pieces. There’s an exposed carbon fibre insert in the bonnet with unique vents, carbon highlights around the front end and for the grille surround, carbon side mirrors, and carbon trim for the tailgate at the back. Special performance seats are showcased inside, saving 30kg, with bespoke aluminium pedals and other trimmings enhancing the overall package. The 2021 Range Rover Sport will go on sale later this year. Australian prices and variant lineup details will be announced closer to launch.
